In the Event is a public artwork
by Sheldon Brown, commissioned by the Seattle Arts Commission for
the Key Arena at the Seattle Center. It consists of 28 video monitors
set into a 60 foot long by 8 foot high wall of cast aluminum relief
panels. Its video imagery is generated from several sources including:
two video cameras, a laser disk, and the live event feed from the
arena. The piece is controlled by a network of 9 computers that sequence
and wipe video imagery across the video monitors. In order to view
the images from these sources, the viewer must transform their own
viewing process to engage the movements of the video images within
the artwork. By doing so, they actively become a part of the mediascape
which the piece operates within. The perceptual zone that the viewer
enters is one that shifts between that of the mediated environment
and that of the physical environment. |
